Although Otto Bauer argued for the introduction of national autonomy for solving national conflicts in Austria, he did not accept national autonomy for the Jewish people in Galicia. 
Bauer's attitude, which can be considered at a first glance as prejudice toward the Jewish, had in its background the contradiction inherent to the Jewish question itself. 
This study elucidates the contradictions inherent to the Jewish question, highlighting the national question by comparing Bauer's view with Nathan Birnbaum's view.
