| Abstract |
当論文は, 1900年から1960年までの日本におけるジフテリア統計を分析した。戦前においてはジフテリアによる死亡は, 東京や大阪などの大都市部に高いという傾向と, 寒冷地に高く, 南に下るにつれて低くなるという傾向の, 二つの特徴を示す。このことが, 大都市の人口稠密による被曝(exposure)の問題と, ジフテリアを顕性化させ呼吸器系の併発症を重症化させやすい気候的な問題の, 二つの要因によって決定されていることを示した。
This study analyzes diphtheria statistics in Japan from 1900 to 1960.
In the prewar period statistics, this study identifies two characteristics: higher mortalities in metropolitan areas such as Tokyo and Osaka; the contrast between higher mortalities in the cold regions and lower figures in the warm ones.
Thus, the study demonstrates two determinants (for diphtheria mortality): (1) higher exposure due to population density in metropolitan areas; and (2) a climactic factor making diphtheria more likely to manifest itself and its respiratory complications more severe.
