Abstract
This paper examines the transmission of kagura to the next generation in the Chugoku area. Japan's rapid economic growth that began in the 1950s has greatly changed people's lifestyle, and the industrial structure and increasing urban population have led to depopulation of agricultural areas. As a result, folk performance that had previously been inherited by specific local residents began to be taught to children as a school club activity in child kagura seminars or at open lectures in public halls.
In recent years, the word "child" is used in "Bitchu child kagura" or "All Japan child kauri summit" [in Shimane Prefecture Hamada City, August 18‒19, 2012]. "Child" is a new term used for the event style's kagura or the child kagura seminar. It refers to people who participate in such activities, from kindergarten to highschool age, who are guided in kagura by a master before joining a semi-professional kagura company. The new term "Child" is not related to age; it is a generic name for the next generation.
What can we read from the new method of transmitting kagura to the next generation? As examples of the new method of transmission, I consider a Bitchu child kagura seminar in Okayama prefecture and a high school's Geihoku kagura club in Hiroshima prefecture. These two cases display locality that comes from a difference in kagura's character and organization as well as a difference in the form of transmission.
This investigation will be useful for folk performance organizations struggling with few successors as it provides an analysis of the features of kagura's transmission to children and explores the children's motivation to learn.
