Abstract
This practical report describes the background behind the introduction of the JB (Jishobiki) model to Chinese language classes for third-year students at Keio senior high school, also describing the procedures used. The model's effectiveness and potential areas for improvement were analyzed on the basis of data collected before and after the introduction of the model using a rubric and free-response statements from the participating students.
Although the JB model had previously been introduced to classes for primary school students whose first language is Japanese or English, this project was a first attempt to introduce the model to a class of senior high school students studying a second foreign language, in this case Chinese, and the smooth introduction of the model was the first challenge to overcome. The use of online tools presented a further issue, as the model was introduced to the students during the covid-19 pandemic.
The focus of the trial was to assess whether the adoption of techniques advocated under the model lead to improved metacognitive skills, such as autonomous learning and application to other subjects. The analysis of the rubric and free-response statements showed that the results were generally in line with expectations.
