Abstract
This is a report on the "Foreign Language Education Project to Foster the Competencies Required in a Globalized Society", a 2020 project led by the Keio Research Center for Foreign Language Education to promote secondary education in foreign languages other than English.
Participants drew up lesson plans for foreign language classes using a Backward Design methodology. Firstly, class objectives for the year and each curriculum unit were established and performance tasks designed to accomplish these objectives. Participants also discussed how to break these objectives down into the Three Competencies defined by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Course of Study.
This paper analyzes how teaching practices based on these lesson plans were implemented by Korean, Spanish, Chinese, German and French instructors in secondary school classes provided to students in Kanagawa Prefecture and Tokyo.
The analysis concluded that the execution of lessons was effective in improving students' understanding and motivation to learn. The project also highlighted aspects unique to foreign language education including awareness of the characteristics of one's own culture and mother tongue, the cultivation of metalinguistic ability, and the possibilities of multicultural education.
