本研究の目的は, 従来の英語史記述がもっぱら学術的な意図をもって書かれてきたことに対して意義を唱え, 英語史が英語教育や歴史教育のために書かれるべきことを提案し, その方法について議論することである。本年度は, 英単語の発音とスペリングの関係を巡る歴史的な問題について, 英語原著の翻訳出版, 論文執筆, 学会発表などを行なった。具体的には以下の3点を含む研究を遂行した。
(1) 近代英語教会第34回大会(2017年6月24日)のシンポジウム「英語音変化研究の課題と展望」(青山学院大学)において「英語史における音・書記の相互作用 --- 中英語から近代英語にかけての事例から ---」と題する口頭発表を行なった。
(2) 英語のスペリングの歴史に関する著書 Horobin, Simon. *Does Spelling Matter?* Oxford : OUP, 2013. を『スペリングの英語史』として翻訳出版した。
(3) <y> の文字を巡る英語のスペリングの諸問題について, "*Telling a Lie* vs *Lying* : Exaptation of the Spelling <y> in the History of English," と題する論文を執筆した。
この3点を中心とする問題を研究することで, 現代英語のスペリングのもつ諸問題を歴史的な観点から見直し, 英語教育や歴史教育に資する英語史について洞察を得ることができた。英語を学ぶということが単に語学的技術を習得するということではなく, それ以上に広く言語や歴史の理解にも通じるということを, 各学習者が認識することによって, 学習意欲を高めることができるはずである。
また, 主としてウェブ媒体を通じて, その成果を公開している(http://user.keio.ac.jp/~rhotta/hellog/)。具体的には, 研究内容に関わる連載記事や他情報へのリンク集を作成し, 新しい「教育のための英語史記述の方法」を探り続けている。
The aim of this research is to argue against the conventional historiography of the English language only for academic purposes and to point out the importance of historiography for teaching English and history. In this academic year, I conducted research into historical linguistic issues about the relationship between spelling and pronunciation. I made the following three achievements in particular.
(1) I read a paper entitled "Interaction of speech and sound in the history of English --- Cases from Middle to Modern English ---" at the Symposium on "The Prospect of English Sound Change Studies" (Aoyama Gakuin University) at the 34th Conference of Modern English Association (24 June 2017).
(2) I published a Japanese translation of Simon Horobin's book about the history of English spelling, *Does Spelling Matter?* (Oxford : OUP, 2013).
(3) I wrote a paper entitled "*Telling a Lie* vs *Lying* : Exaptation of the Spelling <y> in the History of English," which clarifies the complex history of the use of the letter <y>.
Through these studies, I was able to arrive at a better understanding of Present-Day English spelling from a historical point of view and gain insight into the English history that contributes to teaching the language and its related history.
