本研究の目的は, 日本語母語話者や他言語話者の分節化単位を探究することにある。そのため日本語母語話者, 日本語学習者(英語母語話者)への音声実験を行い, 最適性理論の枠組みで分析する。それによって, 日本語母語話者の英語教育法, 他言語(主に英語)母語話者の日本語教育法への提案にも繋がる。3年計画である本研究の2年目に当たる今年度は, 申請当初の計画に従って研究を遂行することができた。まず, 1年目に行った先行研究の精査を土台として分節化を測定・分析する実験内容の企画立案・デザイン作成を行った。その案・デザインが妥当性のあるものかどうかを確認するために, 本実験の前に, 慶應義塾大学, 上智大学における日本語母語話者や米国ウィラメット大学における日本語学習者(主に英語母語話者)への聞き取りによる小規模な仮実験を行った。また, 分節化の単位に関する最適性理論の精緻化を昨年に引き続き行った。夏には米国カリフォルニア大学バークレー校のKeith Johnson教授のもとを訪れ, 最先端の音声実験設備の見学や説明を受け, また実験音韻論の研究会に出席することで音声学・音韻論の第一人者達から教授を受け知見を深めた。またその渡米の際, 米国グランデール大学のPatricia Hironimous教授と最適性理論に関する議論を深め, 日本語母語話者で同大学へ留学している学生の英語学習への分節化単位の影響について助言を受ける機会も持った。かねてより共同で研究に取り組んできたオレゴン州ウィラメット大学の藤原美保教授もこの機会にカリフォルニア州に来てくださり, 実験や理論精緻化への綿密な研究打ち合わせができた。その成果の一部を11月の日本英語学会第35回大会において発表した。また国内でも上智大学の北原真冬教授, 東京大学の田中伸一教授, 大東文化大学の米山聖子教授, 法政大学の田島圭一教授等から有益な助言をいただいた。
The purpose of this research is two-fold. First, it will investigate whether the phonological unit of segmentation is different in languages by conducting phonetic experiments toward Japanese speakers and Japanese learners whose mother tongue is English. Second, on the basis of the result of the experiment, it will study how phonological constraints explain the unit of segmentation within the framework of Optimality Theory. The research goal in the second year (this year) of a three-year plan was smoothly accomplished as follows: First, I made a basic proposal and the design of the phonetic experiment based on the research last year, and made a pilot experiment in small groups. Second, I visited University of California, Berkley to observe the experimental equipment for phonetics. I met Professor Keith Johnson there, and received his lecture on the equipment, and attended his research group meeting. I got invaluable advice and comments from the researchers attended there. I also discussed with Professor Patricia Hironymous from Glendale University regarding Optimality Theory. Professor Miho Fujiwara, Willamette University, Oregon, visited California while I was there, and we had meetings on how to conduct the experiments both at Willamette and Keio University in detail. Thirdly, I presented a part of the accomplishment in this research at the 35th Conference of English Society of Japan in November 19th, 2017. In addition to the professors mentioned above, several leading researchers in Japan such as Professor Mafuyu Kitahara, Sophia University, Professor Shinichi Tanaka, Tokyo University, Professor Kiyoko Yoneyama, Daito-Bunka University, and Professor Keiichi Tajima, Hosei University gave me beneficial comments and advice.
