福沢諭吉は, 廃藩置県後の旧藩主(大名華族)が旧領地に帰郷し, その資産を殖産興業や育英事業に投資してほしいと期待した。本研究では, 慶應義塾出身の旧福岡藩主家・黒田長成(侯爵)を事例として取り上げ, その義塾での学修, ケンブリッジ大学への留学, 地元・福岡との絆と育英事情の実態について調査した。具体的には, 福岡市博物館, 福岡県立図書館, 福岡市総合図書館において資料調査を実施し, その成果として, 郷土誌『福岡県人』, 『筑紫史談』, 『筑前』などに, 長成の慶應義塾への入学にあたって福沢が認めた覚書(新資料)を発見したほか, 黒田家による藩校・修猷館の復興過程, 「黒田奨学会」の歴史と実態, 旧筑前国出身者との親睦会「筑前会」や「報古会」の活動の実態, などを明らかにすることができた。その過程で, 福岡出身の政治家, 金子堅太郎や初代福岡市長, 山中立木が中心的な役割を果たしていることが確認された。黒田奨学会は現在も活動を続けており, 修猷館は県立学校となって, 福岡屈指の進学校としてその名を馳せている。福沢は義塾出身の国会議員の会合に長成を招いているが, まさにその期待に応えたものとして高く評価していたに違いない。報告者はすでにこの成果を研究ノートにまとめ, 『法学研究』に投稿済みである。明治期の近代化は「上」(政府)からの振興によって実現していったという印象が強いが, 実際にはこうした旧藩主による「下」からの振興も教育・産業の発展を支えていた。報告者はすでに同様の事例を, 旧延岡藩・内藤家, 旧中津藩・奥平家, 旧長岡藩・牧野家, 旧薩摩藩・島津家などにおいてあきらかにしており, これらの成果は河出書房新社より『近代を創った「殿様」たち』と題して刊行される予定である。また, こうした日本の近代化過程については海外からの関心も高いと思われるため, 黒田家に関する研究ノートを英訳し, 英文雑誌に投稿すべく準備を進めている。
Yukichi Fukuzawa expected old feudal lords (Daimyo Kazoku) to go back to old domain, and invest their properties in industry and education. In this research, I picked up marquis Nagashige Kuroda who was a son of feudal lord of Fukuoka domain and had studied at Keio Gijuku. My research focused his educational process at Keio Gijuku and University of Cambridge, ties with his old domain Fukuoka, and actual condition of scholarship. Exactly, I have made research at Fukuoka City Museum, Fukuoka Prefectural Library, and Fukuoka City Public Library. As the result, I found a memorandum which is a new material written by Yukichi Fukuzawa when Nagashige Kuroda entered to Keio Gijuku. And I clarified restoration process of Shuyukan which was the school of Fukuoka domain led by Kuroda family, history and actual condition of Kuroda Shogakukai (Kuroda Scholarship Foundation), and conditions of Chikuzenkai and Shokokai which ware friendship organization between old feudal lord and people who lived in Chikuzen province. In the process of this research, I found Kentaro Kaneko who was politician from Fukuoka and Tachiki Yamanaka who was first Mayor of Fukuoka had achieved central roll. Kuroda Shogakukai is active still now, and Shuyukan became a public school and achieved as a famous school in Fukuoka prefecture. When Fukuzawa invited members of imperial diet who graduated Keio including Nagashige, I am sure that Fukuzawa thought highly of Nagashige. I made a research note of this result and contributed to Hogakukenkyu. While many people have an image that Government had strongly promoted modernization in Meiji-era, industry and education had been supported by old feudal lords. I had clarified these cases in old Nobeoka domain Naito Family, old Nakatsu domain Okudaira Family, old Nagaoka domain Makino Family and old Satsuma domain Shimazu family. These results will be published by Kawaide-shobo shinsya under the title of "Feudal lords made modern Japan". Because I think these processes of modernization attract interests of foreign countries, my research note was translated for English, and I am ready for contribution for English magazine.
